The Goal

ECHO's StoryLine Project was founded on a simple, yet powerful, premise: When we share our stories, and listen openly to the stories of others, we expand our understanding of who we are as a community. We discover what we share in common and begin to understand the diverse experiences that shape our lives and community. It’s a beginning…toward creating a more connected community.

The StoryLine Bus travels throughout Greater Winston-Salem, providing opportunities for everyday people like you to record their life stories and listen to and learn from the stories of their neighbors.

StoryLine's Story

At an ECHO Marketing Committee meeting in 2006, members discussed various ways ECHO might foster connection among people from all walks of life in the greater Winston-Salem community. The importance of listening to each other's stories immediately came to mind.

Making a story sharing project program a reality began with the generous donation of a used bookmobile. Most recently used as an ice cream truck, the bookmobile was transformed, through the generous support of CJMWM Creative and SPEVCO, into a state-of-the-art mobile recording studio.

Today, ECHO's StoryLine bus travels throughout the greater Winston-Salem community gathering the stories of everyday people. Participants receive a free CD of the recording and a copy is archived at the main library. Selected stories are shared with the community in a variety of ways. You can hear the stories on the radio, listen to stories on this site and hear them in various community venues from time to time.  The StoryLine theme song is from "Sparklers" by the Enrichment Center Percussion Ensemble.
